LUCY SUESS.jpg

Lucy has always been in her element when thinking up, writing and telling stories. Originally from Santa Cruz California, Lucy spent much of her childhood living around the world before moving to Aotearoa New Zealand at age 12. Driven by lived experience, growing up in Te Tai Tokerau has served as the inspiration for many of her films and characters.

Since graduating from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Arts in Film, Lucy has worked in film, broadcast, live event production, and design.

Lucy’s debut short film, Shadow Cut, received Kōpere Hou - Fresh Shorts funding and support from the New Zealand Film Commission. Written, directed and edited by Lucy, Shadow Cut screened in-competition at 20 film festivals across North America, Europe and Oceania, 11 of which are Oscar®-qualifying and FIAPF accredited. At the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, Shadow Cut was nominated for Best International Short Film. At Manchester International Short Film Festival, Lucy won the Newcomer Award (best debut short film) for Shadow Cut.

In 2019, Lucy was selected as the Director's Attachment for feature film Baby Done, directed by Curtis Vowell and executively produced by Taika Waititi and Carthew Neal. This opportunity was supported by the New Zealand Film Commission’s On-the-Job Talent Development fund.

In 2020, Lucy and her feature film project, Ka Pai Motel, were chosen to be mentored by Dame Gaylene Preston as part of the New Zealand Film Commission’s inaugural Hunga Taunaki ā Rorohiko Online Mentorship Programme

In 2021, Lucy’s short film, Pack Rat, received Catalyst He Kauahi funding and support from the New Zealand Film Commission. Catalyst He Kauahi also provides funding for the development of Lucy’s feature film, Ka Pai Motel.

Lucy resides between New York and New Zealand. Currently in Wellington, Lucy is completing post-production on the short film Pack Rat and development on the feature film Ka Pai Motel.

While Lucy spends most of her free time coming up with stories and developing films, she also loves to get lost with her Leica M2, tend to her jungle of houseplants, write tons of lists, and eat copious amounts of spaghetti.
