Lucy is an award-winning filmmaker based between New York City and Aotearoa New Zealand. Specialising in narrative filmmaking, Lucy crafts character-driven stories with a distinct poetic voice, writing, directing, and editing her own work.
Born in California, Lucy spent much of her childhood living around the world before moving to Aotearoa at age 12. Spending her formative years travelling, being transient and growing up in Te Tai Tokerau has served as inspiration for her storytelling.
With New Zealand Film Commission funding and support, Lucy has produced two short films and is developing her feature.
Lucy’s debut short, Shadow Cut, was awarded the highly competitive Kōpere Hou Fresh Shorts grant. The film went on to screen in-competition at 20 film festivals, including Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), New Orleans Film Festival, and HollyShorts. At TIFF, Shadow Cut was nominated for Best International Short Film. Shadow Cut also earned Lucy the Newcomer Award for Best Debut Short Film at the Manchester International Short Film Festival.
Lucy is now excited to present her sophomore short, Pack Rat. Pack Rat was a recipient of the New Zealand Film Commissions highly competitive He Kauahi Catalyst grant. The film is currently on its international festival run, having just screened at six Oscar®-qualifying festivals. Pack Rat has already received recognition for both its writing, cinematography and acting; winning Best Screenplay at the Oscar®-qualifying Show Me Shorts Film Festival, GOLD at the Australian Cinematographers Society Awards and the Special Jury Award for Rising Star at the Oscar®-qualifying RiverRun International Film Festival.
Lucy's feature film, Needles Inn, is currently in development with the New Zealand Film Commission. Needles Inn was mentored by Dame Gaylene Preston as part of the New Zealand Film Commission’s inaugural Hunga Taunaki ā Rorohiko Mentorship Programme.
